Essential Oil Chart for Its Uses,Benefits, Application and Properties

The use of essential oils for medicinal and cosmetic purposes precede modern medicine by centuries. Our ancestors have been using them for a long time.

But can we trust these popular remedies and how exactly should they be used? The uses and effectiveness of essential oils has been passed down through generations but until recently, there has been little research on their benefits.

Studies across the world have been initiated by the food, cosmetic and tobacco industries.

Although researching essential oils presents some difficulties, these studies have demonstrated time and time again that essential oils can have a positive impact on a variety of health concerns.

It would appear that our ancestors were right about the benefits of these sometimes-disregarded remedies as far as this may be concerned ever.

Well known fact that no remedy will work properly if not given in the correct manner and at the correct dosage.

This article aims to take some of the mystery out of some essential oil dosages and give you the opportunity to safely trial a few of these natural therapies.

Before we start, allow us to explain some of the important terms:

The conditions for which an essential oil is known to be effective. These may not be medically proven, some will be anecdotal but many have been used effectively for countless years.
These are the medical or other conditions with which you shouldn’t use an essential oil. For example peppermint oil may be dangerous during pregnancy.
This is the amount of an essential oil you should use in a given situation. For example, you might need more oil in a bath than in a massage solution. For this article we have measured the dosage in drops although a more accurate measure would be grams or milliliters.
This is the volume of liquid into which your essential oil will be mixed. Essential oil carriers vary, they are usually either hot (but not boiling) water, boiling water (for a tea) or certain vegetable oils such as: apricot oil, sweet almond oil, grape seed oil, avocado oil, olive oil, sesame oil, evening primrose oil or rapeseed oil.
Please note that all of the given dosages are for adults. Whilst some essential oils can be used for children, not all are recommended. Care should be taken and expert advice should be sought as this is most important as it is well known.

Bergamot Essential Oil Uses

Method – Although bergamot makes an excellent and effective aromatherapy oil, its direct application to the skin is not recommended as it can cause sun sensitivity.Ingestion either in tea or on its own is also not recommended.

Contraindications–If you do want to use bergamot essential oil on your skin, you should make sure that you only use it at least 6 hours before you go out in the sun.

Dosage I– Bergamot is really effective in a warm bath, you should use a maximum of 8 drops.

Dosage II – Bergamot is also effective when you inhale it in a steam solution. For this, you need to add 2 to 3 drops to a bowl of hot but not boiling water.

Carrier – Hot water should be used for baths and steaming. Jojoba, sweet almond or avocado oils are recommended oil carriers.


 Clary Sage Essential Oil Uses

Contraindications – If you are pregnant, you should avoid large doses of clary sage, particularly in the first trimester but there are no other significant issues.

Dosage I –Using clary sage in the bath will be a sensual and pleasurable experience. The recommended dosage for this purpose is 2 to 5 drops.

Dosage II– Clary sage also makes a sensory and sometimes erotic massage oil. It should be mixed in equal parts to its carrier oil. For example, 6 drops of Clary Sage would require 6 drops of carrier oil.

Carrier –Clary sage can be used in hot (but not boiling) water. It can also be used with a carrier oil, coconut or jojoba oils are recommended.


Cinnamon Essential Oil Uses

Method –Cinnamon is usually taken orally (by mouth) and is particularly pleasant in a tea. Cinnamon is also effective when burnt.

Contraindications – Although cinnamon is a common essential oil, you should avoid using it if you are an alcoholic. You should also consult your doctor if you are suffering from prostate cancer or kidney and liver problems. Hemophiliacs or those taking anticoagulant drugs should not use cinnamon oil neither should those undergoing chemotherapy. Cinnamon essential oil is not recommended during pregnancy but the cinnamon spice is absolutely fine.

Dosage– Cinnamon is usually taken orally (by mouth) and the recommended dose is 1 to 4 drops.

Carrier – Cinnamon is one of the rare essential oils that can be taken on its own, i.e. without a carrier. Should you wish to use a carrier, coconut oil or honey work really well.


Eucalyptus Essential Oil Uses

Another great use of eucalyptus in as an antiseptic, antifungal or antiviral agent.Most of us perhaps know eucalyptus as an effective treatment for respiratory problems, particularly those related to the common cold or to influenza. On top of all of these great uses, Eucalyptus can also soothe aches and pains.

Method –For respiratory problems eucalyptus can be used in hot water as a steam inhalation. It can also be gargled, used as a mouth spray or added to your usual shampoo. Eucalyptus may be rubbed into the skin but try it on a small area first and remember that it can cause the skin to feel cold.

Contraindications – If you suffer from high blood pressure or epilepsy you should avoid using eucalyptus by any method. Oral methods should not be used if you are suffering from stomach or bowel problems. Although eucalyptus may be useful for the treatment of children, it should not be used on children under 2 years of age.

Dosage I – If you wish to take eucalyptus orally (by mouth) the recommended dose is 1 to 2 drops.

Dosage II – A more common use of eucalyptus is inhalation. In this case, 3 to 4 drops should be used in hot water.

Carrier – Eucalyptus is a very strong essential oil and may benefit from being mixed with other essential oils such as lavender, rosemary or thyme. Experiment with your own mixtures of these. If you want to inhale eucalyptus then hot (but not boiling) water is the best option.


Lavender Essential Oil Uses

Lavender can also be used as a deodorizer or insect repellent.

Method –Lavender can be used with water as a spray for use in a room or on the body. It makes a tasty tea with other herbs and can be combined with a carrier oil for a relaxing massage experience. It can also be inhaled as steam.

Contraindications – Lavender is generally a safe and gentle essential oil, but it is not recommended in the early months of pregnancy.If used directly on the skin, itcan cause sun sensitivity or an allergic reaction.

Dosage I– Lavender is very relaxing if used in a bath where the recommended dose is 6 drops.

Dosage II – For a steam inhalation of lavender oil add 2 to 4 drops in 2 to 3 cups of boiling water.

Dosage III– To use lavender essential oil for massage add 1 to 4 drops to an oil-based carrier (see below).

Dosage IV– To take orally (by mouth) add 1 to 2 teaspoons to a cup of boiling water.

Carrier – The recommended carriers for lavender essential oil boiling water (for a tea), hot water (for a bath or steam inhalation) or a carrier oil such as wheat germ, jojoba or evening primrose (for massage).


Grapefruit Essential Oil Uses
